Director of Finance

The District of Houston has an opening for a Director of Finance. As the leader of the Finance team of 3 full-time staff and reporting to the Chief Administrative Officer, you will be responsible for managing the financial affairs of the District and providing strategic and creative financial advice to the Chief Administrative Officer and Council. Success in this role will require expert knowledge of municipal government financial operating processes, along with related legislation. Thorough knowledge of the principles, best practices and concepts related to financial management and accounting, including budget formulation and maintenance processes, investment and cash flow projections is critical.

Your core responsibilities will include:

  • Leading the preparation of the District’s Five Year Financial Plan;
  • Recommending to the Chief Administrative Officer necessary bylaws, policies and procedures related to all aspects of revenue generation and control, expenditure controls, reserve and surplus funding, taxation and exemptions, other fiscal matters;
  • Coordinating the preparation of quarterly and annual financial statements for Senior Staff, Council, and the public;
  • Exercising control and supervision over all financial affairs;
  • Directing and managing members of the Finance team; and
  • Overseeing the District’s Financial Information Systems.
You are the ideal candidate if you are a designated Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) and have proven capabilities in financial management. You also have a proven ability to analyze and plan the financial activities of organizations, and are a skilled negotiator with a proven record of strong interpersonal and communications skills. You will also be able to demonstrate knowledge of the Community Charter, Local Government Act, and Public Sector Accounting Board standards.

Executive Assistant

The District of Houston has an opening for an Executive Assistant . Reporting to the Manager of Corporate Services, you will be responsible for specialized and confidential administrative work in the areas of corporate administration, grant administration and human resources, directly supporting the Chief Administrative Officer and Manager of Corporate Services.

Your core responsibilities will include:

  • Provide general administrative/secretarial support to the Chief Administrative Officer, Manager of Corporate Services, and Senior Staff including but not limited to: processing confidential material and matters; typing correspondence, reports and related materials; maintaining files; arranging appointments and meetings and coordinating travel arrangements;
  • Conduct grant research, writing, submissions, and reporting on behalf of Senior Staff and Community Groups;
  • Under the direction of the Manager of Corporate Services, provides administrative support in Corporate Administration processes and programs including the online agenda and minute taking;
  • Assist the Corporate Officer and Staff in maintaining the LGMA Records Management System and document digitization;
  • With approval from the Corporate Officer, coordinate, social media posts, website updates, press releases, newsletters, and advertisements; and/li>
  • Carry out additional duties and functions as may be assigned by the Chief Administrative Officer or Manager of Corporate Services.
You are the ideal candidate if you have a Certificate, Diploma, or Degree of an accredited program related to Public Administration, Business Administration, or related Social Sciences. You also have a proven ability to undertake research, communicate effectively, and manage frequent and changing deadlines. You will also be able to demonstrate knowledge of the Community Charter and the Local Government Act. This position works scheduled shifts 8:00 A.M. – 5:00 P.M. Monday to Friday and flexible hours including regular evenings and/or split shifts for meetings not to exceed 40 hours a week.

Casual Lifeguards

The Houston Leisure Facility has a standing opening for Casual Lifeguards - inquire today about position availability!

In order to qualify, you must have certification from the National Lifesaving Society, a CPR "C" Certificate, and First Aid Level 1 training. Previous experience as a Lifeguard and Water Safety Instructor certification are preferable, but not necessary for the position.
