Background

The Houston Economic Diversification Project aims to broaden the local economic foundation beyond its traditional reliance on forestry and manufacturing. This effort is directed towards developing an advanced strategy for economic development and diversification. By conducting a thorough analysis of both current and anticipated economic conditions, the initiative seeks not only to identify but also to strategically leverage sectors with notable growth potential. This comprehensive strategy is intended to attract investment, encourage the expansion of small enterprises, enhance land utilization, and improve community services, ultimately diversifying Houston's economy with a stronger and more enduring foundation.

In 2024 the District of Houston has commissioned Deloitte to support the development of an Economic Diversification Strategy. Funding for this project is through the Rural Economic Diversification and Infrastructure Program (REDIP).
